Where is all began…

The NYC Department of Transportation Street Seats program is a seasonal project that is a seasonal project that reclais portions of New York City’s streets for much needed public space.

Since 2015…

Parsons School of design has collaborated with the NYC DOT to design and build a public park through an undergraduate elective class offered by the BFA in Architectural Design. Over the course of the spring semester, the project is designed and constructed by students from Parsons School of Constructed Environments in collaboration with students from other colleges at The New School. The site occupies two parking spaces in front of The New School’s University Center on the corner of 13th Street and Fifth Avenue.

Students Started with Twelve individual proposals for the park and then worked in groups to combine their ideas, arriving at a singular design just 7 weeks after the start of th semester. The final product is comprised of features that were considered important by the whole group. THe users of the space, site context, environmental factors, use of locally available renewable materials and the time challenge of both designing and fabricating the installation before the end of the semester were the main drivers of the final scheme.
